Description
By John Guarnera
Pit fired pieces are fired in the most primitive of approaches in a modernized way. Many of these pieces are fired numerous times, first to change from workable clay to it’s more permanent condition, i then fire pieces in an electric kiln to add bits of form and color, some pieces may have decals added and fired, then they are fired in the pit. The pit is a primitive brick affair that is fired with kiln dried white pine boards in a basic teepee style fire. The layering of combustible materials and coloring oxides surround the pieces in a sagger or not depending on the hoped for results. These types of pieces are decorative only.
